Adhan (Azaan) - The Muslim Call To Prayer

  • In the Islamic faith, Adhan (Athan or Azan) is the announcement or call to the obligatory prayers (Salah). It is a melodious recitation given in a mosque by a person before the start of each Salah.

  • The person reciting the adhan is called a 'Muezzin'.

  • Athan is recited in the Arabic language.

  • Through Adhan, Muslims are informed about prayer start time, and they are also reminded that prayer leads to salvation.

The call to adhan is as follows:

Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar.

Translation: Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest.

Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar.

Translation: Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest.

Ash-hadu ann la ilaha ill-Allah.

Translation: I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah.

Ash-hadu ann la ilaha ill-Allah.

Translation: I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah.

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasulullah.

Translation: I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar-Rasulullah.

Translation: I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Hayya ‘al-as-Salah. Hayya ‘al-as-Salah.

Translation: Hasten to the Prayer. Hasten to the Prayer.

Hayya ‘al-al-falah. Hayya ‘al-al-falah.

Translation: Hasten to real success. Hasten to real success.

Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar.

Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest.

La ilaha ill-Allah.

Translation: There is none worthy of worship but Allah.

The call to adhan is the same for all of the five Salah except that in the adhan for the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer, the following words are added after Hayya ‘al-al-falah:

As-Salatu khairun min an-naum. As-Salatu khairun min an-naum.

Translation: Prayer is better than sleep. Prayer is better than sleep.

What is Iqamah?

The Iqamah is the second call to Salah, which indicates that it's time to stand up and start Salah. It is called by the muezzin after the Adhan (Athan).

The words of the iqamah are the same as the adhan, except that after “Hayya ‘al-al-falah” one adds:

Qad qamati-ss-Salah. Qad qamati-ss-Salah.

Translation: Prayer is ready. Prayer is ready.
